Bringing McDonaldland Back — For Real.
In 2025, McDonald’s revived their iconic world from the 70s: McDonaldland. It launched with a special “happy” meal designed for nostalgic adults. Using Snapchat’s next-gen AR, we made meal into something much bigger.
Coming To A McDonald’s Near You
A geo-fenced filter was tied to 14,000 McDonald’s locations. Once you were on premise, your phone revealed another world waiting just beneath the surface.
Characters and interactions were tied to specific architectural elements, like ceilings and table shapes. That way the animations would interact dynamically with their surroundings even when floor plans varied widely.
Order up! Sit down with your McDonaldland Meal and watch it come to life.
Our lens unlocked animations in the art and from the prizes inside the box.
Each character had their own unique game that tied into their McDonaldland storyline. So a world of experiences was waiting inside every box. Finally, a PlayPlace you can take home from the drive thru.

Patent Pending
With so many experiences to unlock, we had a problem to solve: how can customers find them all from just one Snapcode?
The answer was a virtual menu, designed to look like a miniature world. Tapping each character would send you to a unique AR Lens. Press back, and the floating island returned, inviting you to explore even more.
This was a first-of-its-kind solution for Snapchat, and they even applied for a patent for the system.
